Most customers know little if anything about beds. They have been sold on "Brand Recognition" from ads on T.V. Most do not know what is in a retail bed let alone a bed made for the contract industry. Basically a contract quality bed is made to stand up to the continuous heavy duty demands that are put on it by the hospitality industry. In the following pages we will cover not only what makes up a mattress, but also how to read through the smoke and mirrors so you can help your customer see if they are comparing apples to apples.

So let us begin with the heart of the mattress,
the coil unit. 95% of all coil units in the United States are made by Leggett
& Platt. Sealy, Serta, Englander and Restonic are but a few of the
bedding companies that use Leggett & Platt coil units. This is the
same brand of coil unit that Hospitality Bedding Co. uses. What makes one
coil unit different from another involves factors such as: Coil Count,
gauge of the Wire, and Type of Coil.

COIL COUNT - The first game that you have to watch
out for involves the coil count. In the industry, coil counts are quoted
by the full size - regardless of what size you're actually buying. The
chart above is broken down by type of coil and then by coil count.
Look under Bonnell for 364.
Look across to the first column for Twin "10x26" which equals
260.
Now look across to the Full column - "14x26" which equals 364.
Again look across to the Full XL column - "14x28" which equals
392.
And finally to the King column - "20x28" which equals 560.
If Hospitality Bedding Co. were quoting on a king size bed then among the
different specifications listed would be that the innerspring or coil unit
was a 364. Another not so ethical salesman might take advantage of his
customer by quoting the actual coil count of a lesser quality bed. For
example look at the chart again under Bonnell but this time follow the
252 across to the King column 16x23 which equals 368. So the uninformed
customer might think they were getting a bargain when in reality they're
getting taken.
